Berkshire |  Private

"True luxury is not about excess. It is about time with those who matter most, the privacy to celebrate exactly as you wish, and the freedom to create something unmistakably your own."

A Private Estate. Quiet Luxury. Celebration Weekends.

Surrounded by open sky and a beautiful Berkshire landscape, the Winthrop Estate offers a rare setting for intimate weddings.  Historic, gracious, and exclusively yours, this is a place where meaningful celebrations are unhurried and enjoyed with the people who matter most.

Why the Berkshires?

The Berkshires have long been a sanctuary for those seeking a "Great Estate" lifestyle. From the European symmetry of Edith Wharton's gardens to the comfortable elegance of Ethelwynde, these properties offer a sense of permanent, grounded luxury that a modern hotel cannot replicate.

The Thinking Behind Slow Celebrations

A slow celebration is a celebration designed like a weekend retreat—not a six-hour sprint. Guests arrive, settle in, and experience the estate as a home: a welcome gathering, an unhurried ceremony, a long table dinner, and time the next day for brunch and goodbyes.

The pace is intentional. The details are thoughtful. The feeling is calm, luminous, and deeply present.

The Three-Day Experience

Friday: The Welcome. Arrive at the estate as the shadows lengthen over the Berkshire hills. An intimate welcoming dinner, a glass of wine by the fire, and the settling-in of your closest circle.

Saturday: The Celebration. A morning of stillness. A ceremony framed by Gilded Age architecture or mountain views. The logistics and welcomes were handled yesterday—today is reserved entirely for the celebration itself.

Sunday: The Soft Farewell. A long, curated brunch under the morning sun. Brothers playing foosball and sisters sharing one final laugh, or a walk through the forested trails. Depart with photos, yes, but even more with the memories of a shared weekend lived well.

The estate is yours for the weekend—and for those who prefer a more generous timeline, we're happy to accommodate Thursday arrivals or Monday departures. Time, after all, is the ultimate luxury.

An Immersive Weekend

The estate becomes yours—entirely. Thirteen bedrooms for your closest circle. Trees that have matured for 150 years. Rooms that accommodate both grand gathering and quiet conversation.

No time limits. No vendor restrictions. No fluorescent-lit conference rooms masquerading as ballrooms. Just a gracious home, thoughtfully appointed, where your vision can unfold at the pace it deserves.

A Note on Music â€‹

The Winthrop Estate has long provided a respite for its owners away from the hustle and bustle of fast-paced New York and Boston—built instead for conversation, contemplation, celebration, and immersion in the exquisite beauty of the Berkshires. If music is wanted outdoors, we keep it unamplified—strings, jazz, acoustic sets—so the evening stays intimate and the estate remains peaceful for guests and neighbors alike. Inside, we have more flexibility, though still with clear, respectful end times. For those seeking a livelier celebration that extends late into the night, we're happy to guide you to several excellent venues in town where that energy is welcome.

Quiet Luxury

We do not advertise widely. We barely maintain social media. We serve a small number of discerning couples and families each year who value craft over spectacle, substance over style, and who understand that the most memorable celebrations are often the most understated.

We can host gatherings of up to 24 guests and can accommodate 24 guests overnight.

We allow a small number of celebrations at Winthrop Estate each year.  We are happy to guide couples and families to other exceptional Berkshire properties when a different setting is the better fit.
